According to mythology, there are two legends that explain the temple’s origins. The first legend involves a local Tamang man whose milking cow went missing. After a search, the man discovered that the cow had wandered into a cliff and was giving milk on the statue of Dupcheshwor Mahadev. This miraculous event is said to have led to the establishment of the temple as a place of worship.
The second legend suggests that Lord Mahadev made a temporary stop at Dupcheshwor before heading to Gosaikunda after he had consumed the Kaalkut poison after the gods and demons had the Samundra Manthan trying to obtain the Amrit( the nectar of life).
The temple originated in the same location and was later renamed Dupcheshwor. It is not clear how this legend is connected to the first, but it is believed to be an important part of the temple’s history and cultural significance.

We had a wonderful experience visiting the Dupcheshwor Mahadev Temple during the fall season. The weather at that time of year is often very pleasant, with sunny skies and occasional rain showers, which can provide a refreshing break from the heat. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area, with ripe rice paddies ready to be harvested and the clear Taadi river flowing at the bottom of the temple.
